Recently Watched Weird TV Shows

Over the past few months, I've sneaked in some time to watch a few TV shows of the unusual sort, beginning way back in November. Here are the ones I liked the best, plus some shows I've already watched and some I'm looking forward to watching.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a Netflix original, was based on the old Archie comic book series. Netflix excels at transforming comic books into really awesome shows, and Sabrina is no exception. It's a darkly weird tale of a teenaged witch attempting to stay on the light side of her craft, but as the series progresses, Sabrina is challenged again and again by her family, her peers, and above all, the devil himself.

From Dusk till Dawn is an expansion of the film by the same name, and wow, is it weird, though because of the vampires, it's usually billed as Horror. But no, trust me, this is a weird one. The Gecko brothers are on the lam after robbing a bank. One is pragmatic, the other is being mentally manipulated by a Mesoamerican vampire of sorts. I've only seen the first season, but it was spectacular.

Imagine the most incredible Urban Fantasy slash Superhero show you've ever seen, set it in Turkey, and you'll get The Protector. Yes, this was originally filmed in Turkish and features dubbed over English here in the States, but it is so incredibly awesome, you're just going to have to get over that. I mean, the son of a rug dealer becomes an indestructible hero. How can you miss that?

While studying solar flares, a physicist receives images of a disastor that hasn't happened yet, and thus begins Paradox, a British SciFi dram originally aired on BBC. It's available on Amazon and is currently free to Prime members. Paradox is only five episodes long and rumor has it there won't be another series (season) made, but those five episodes are well worth the viewing time.

In this show based on the Dark Horse comic of the same name, seven siblings reunite upon the death of their adoptive father. Six of the seven possess super powers, but the seventh...oh, she's the one who needs watching. The Umbrella Academy features a well-rounded cast of truly interesting characters, including Cha-Cha, a time travelling assassin played by Mary J. Blige.

I also caught up on The Blacklist, a crime drama that is, in its own unique way, something of a weird watch. Well, James Spader is such a fabulous actor. I am absolutely positive he ad libbed whole chunks of his scenes.

I haven't watched these in a while, but I wholly recommend Lost Girl (an Urban Fantasy about a succubus), Glitch (an Australian TV show about a group of people who are resurrected), and Bitten (a Contemporary Fantasy starring a female werewolf based on books by Kelley Armstrong). Then there's Haven and The Magicians and Gotham and...

Hmm. Maybe I need to cut back on my TV time!

No, wait. There are so many more shows I'd like to see, including Diablero (a priest teams up with a demon hunter), the third season of The Expanse (and really, if I have to describe that one to you, there's no hope), and a forthcoming Netflix series called Raising Dion about a single mom trying to raise her superhero son. That one's also based on a comic book.

The selection of really great shows can be overwhelming, but that's not such a bad thing when you love a good story, and especially when you love a really good weird story.
